Advocacy Visits by Muhsal Disabled Support Foundation

Introduction

The Muhsal Disabled Support Foundation recently conducted advocacy visits to key institutions in Gombe State to address gender and disability-based violence (GDBV). The purpose was to inquire about policies supporting persons with disabilities (PWDs), advocate for the implementation of inclusive policies, and promote the provision of sign language interpreters in public places. These visits are crucial for ensuring the rights and welfare of PWDs.

Gombe State Ministry of Health

Purpose: To discuss the provision of sign language interpreters in healthcare facilities.
Details: We emphasized the need for sign language interpreters in primary healthcare facilities and hospitals to improve communication and healthcare outcomes for PWDs.

Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare

Purpose: To inquire about policies supporting PWDs and their implementation.
Details: The discussion focused on existing policies aimed at supporting PWDs, with an emphasis on their practical implementation. We advocated for more inclusive policies and programs that address the unique needs of PWDs, particularly women and girls who are often more vulnerable to abuse and neglect.

Police Headquarters, Gombe State Command

Purpose: To inquire about PWDs reporting cases and to segregate data for easy identification and tracking.
Details: Our visit aimed at sensitizing the police force on the specific challenges faced by PWDs regarding gender-based violence. We also inquired about the reporting frequency of PWD cases and pleaded for segregated data to better identify and track incidents involving PWDs.

Nigerian Civil Defense Corps, Gombe State Command

Purpose: To enhance support and protection for PWDs.
Details: We discussed collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and protection of PWDs. This included establishing specialized units trained in dealing with cases involving PWDs and incorporating sign language interpreters in their operations.

Gombe State Ministry of Justice

Purpose: To advocate for the legal rights of PWDs.
Details: Our focus was on ensuring that the legal system is accessible to PWDs. We advocated for the inclusion of sign language interpreters in legal proceedings and the enforcement of laws protecting the rights of PWDs.

Government Girls Secondary School, Amada

Purpose: To promote inclusive education and sensitize students about GDBV.
Details: We discussed the importance of creating an inclusive educational environment for students with disabilities. This includes training teachers to accommodate and support PWDs and implementing policies that prevent discrimination and promote equality. We also sensitized students about gender and disability-based violence, educating them on how to protect themselves and the importance of reporting any incidents of abuse.

Community Leaders: Mai Unguwa Kasuwan Mata and Hakimin Liji

Purpose: To engage local communities in supporting PWDs.
Details: We highlighted the role of community leaders in fostering an inclusive society. Discussions centered on raising awareness about the rights of PWDs, encouraging community support, and addressing local barriers that hinder the full participation of PWDs in community life.
